Why We Picked Metal Animals

Metal Animals is won or lost in the first two minutes, and it lets you see that afterwards. It is clicking to place and confirm with the numbers shown, and the numbers are the argument. A loss teaches more than a win here, and it teaches quickly. Ranked 70 of 183, it is neither the biggest nor the simplest thing on the shelf. By the numbers: 4.6 out of 5 from 266 ratings.

How to Play

The game is small enough to explain in three lines:

  • One click selects, the next confirms, and the game waits as long as you do.
  • The map shows where the pressure is; the budget decides when you can answer it.
  • Site your defenses where the path narrows, not where it enters the map.

Editor’s Note

A mouse is the intended input; the game does not port well to a thumb, and it does not try. Compared with a full real-time strategy game, this shelf drops the micro and keeps the budget, which travels better to a tab.

Metal Animals answers a question nobody knew they needed answered: what happens when cute, furry animals strap on heavy weapons and go to war? You command a small squad of armed critters defending your tank against an enemy invasion, and the contrast between the adorable soldiers and the chaotic firefights gives the game its charm.

The objective is straightforward defense. Enemy animals charge in from the field, determined to destroy your tank, and your crew rides on top of it returning fire. You manage your team as the waves roll in, directing their attention to the most dangerous attackers and keeping the tank's health intact. The controls are simple enough for quick sessions, typically just taps or clicks to position and activate your defenders, but the action on screen gets busy fast.

Each new wave raises the stakes. Enemies arrive in greater numbers and with tougher compositions, and the tank you are protecting only takes so much punishment before the run ends. Between the pressure of the waves, the game rewards you with the resources to strengthen your squad, so surviving a rough round often means your animals come back better armed for the next one.

Positioning and priority matter more than raw clicking speed. Focus fire on the enemies closest to the tank before they land hits, and spread your defenders so no single flank gets overwhelmed. When things get crowded, protect the tank first and worry about style points later, because a few seconds of ignoring the front line can end a good run.

Metal Animals suits players who like tower-defense-style survival with a lighthearted skin, and anyone who appreciates strategy that does not take itself too seriously. It is quick to learn, hectic in the best way once the waves pile up, and playable right in the browser whenever you feel like leading the fuzziest army around.
